UK's largest food and grocery employers unite to tackle youth unemployment

More than 150 businesses from the food and grocery industry are offering 15,000 young people "valuable" skills training, as part of a campaign launched this week.

The Feeding Britain's Future initiative, launched by the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD), aims to help tackle youth unemployment by offering opportunities with some of the UK's largest employers.

More than 150 businesses are involved from all sections of the industry, including Muller Dairy, Mondelez and Morrisons.

Feeding Britain's Future will offer young people work experience, training in CV writing, interviewing and presenting, and help applying for jobs.

As well as workshops, and interview sessions with HR managers, young people will have the opportunity to try out practical jobs, developing their skills to improve their chances of getting a job.

Joanne Denney-Finch chief executive of IGD said she wants to see young people learn the "rules of the game" and help them build confidence so they can "compete in the jobs market".

"In our industry people can genuinely progress from the shop or factory floor to the top of the business," said Deeney-Finch.

In last year's pilot of the scheme, 98% of young participants said they felt more confident about applying for jobs, and 93% said they were more likely to consider a job in the food and grocery industry.
