Peer 1 drops performance management in favour of employee pledges

Internet provider, Peer 1 Hosting last month scrapped performance management in favour of employee-led career promises.

Sheila Bouman (pictured), chief people and performance officer at the organisation, which is based in Vancouver Canada, but last year opened a Southampton office, said: "I don't think most performance management experiences are rewarding, so we threw out the term. Instead we encourage staff to make a 'Peer promise', where they outline their aspirations to peers and management. I don't think performance mangement should be top-down, telling people what they should do - staff are adults. Visible peer promises mean employees take responsibility in strategy of the organisation.

"We want to hire ambitious staff that share our values and we offer them coaching and mentoring to support this."
