Online recruitment showed no sign of recovery in August

Despite predictions this morning that recruitment could be about to see a recovery, online recruitment took a dip in August as job availability remained unchanged for a fifth month.

According to the Monster Employment Index, UK hiring in August was down 35% from August 2008.

In education, job availability plummeted 14% from the previous month and agricultural, forestry and fishing vacancies saw a drop of 14% from July.

Hugo Sellert, head of economic research at Monster, said: "Although employer demand has remained largely stable since the beginning of the year, businesses have not yet resumed hiring. The level of vacancies across the UK is still insufficient to reverse increasing job losses. The rising number of unemployed means businesses have a larger pool of available talent to choose from. This increase in ease-of-hiring is in turn contributing to the reduction in advertising of live jobs."

But the index also reveals job availability has stabilised from the huge decline reported at the end of 2008 and August saw increased hiring of workers in marketing, PR, media, administrative, organisation, banking, finance, insurance and IT,

Job opportunities for clerical support workers have increased by 8% since July (but still marked a decrease of 34% since August 2008).

Since 2008, online hiring fell further in the Midlands, dropping by 26%.
