Nurture entrepreneurial flair or lose top talent, study shows

Employers risk losing their most talented workers if they fail to embrace their ideas and innovations, research by cosmetics company L’Oreal UK and Ireland has revealed.

The study polled 2,000 UK workers on whether they could be entrepreneurial in their jobs.

It found 30% of workers felt unable to fulfill their potential and planned on finding a new job in the next year, and 73% were more concerned about having their contributions valued than a good salary or benefits package.

A third of employees want an employer who encourages innovation and creative thinking, 38% want the opportunity to have their ideas heard, and 27% believe they have ideas that would be good for the business.

The majority of workers (71%) believe their workplaces do not have the right systems in place for contributions to be made.

A ''yes'' culture

L'Oreal HR director Isabelle Minneci (pictured) said to inspire ideas among workers, employers must look at developing a workplace culture that encourages entrepreneurialism.

"Employers need to try to implement a 'yes' culture into its DNA and spread this throughout the organisation," Minneci told HR magazine.

"To inspire employees to have more of an entrepreneurial mindset, it's about being open and giving workers opportunities to come to you with ideas.

"Make yourself available to your employees and create a forum to make the ideas happen," Minneci said.
