NHS Employers backs seven-day care in hospitals but opposes pay rise

NHS Employers organisation, the voice for employers in the NHS, has urged a doctors' pay review to support seven-day care but not a pay rise.

The Doctors' and Dentists' Review Body (DDRB) was this week asked by employers to refrain from increasing pay next year and to encourage hospital doctors to make progress towards seven-day care.

Last month the Government announced a pay freeze for all NHS staff until 2015.

Gill Bellord, director of employment relations and reward for the NHS Employers, told the meeting between the DDRB and employers, that the organisation's policy, including pay reviews should be patient centred.

"We are again urging the DDRB to not recommend any pay rise for hospital doctors and instead support changes to contracts to achieve better seven-day care," said Bellord.

"Our contract negotiations with the British Medical Association (BMA) are happening right now and this is the opportunity for consultants to start agreeing greater presence during evenings and weekends.

"We hope the DDRB will tell doctors that change needs to be embraced in negotiations, especially removing contractual obstacles to improving care."
