CIPD changes membership criteria

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has changed its membership criteria to enable HR professionals with experience but no qualifications to join the organisation.

The institute, which represents over 135.000 members, said that the changes reflect the increasingly diverse routes into HR and will enable those who have risen in the profession without starting with a CIPD qualification to have their contribution recognised.

The ‘Experience Assessment’ route will involve applicants demonstrating appropriate workplace evidence, colleague feedback and a "detailed professional discussion."

The institute has three levels of membership: associate, chartered member and charted fellow.

Sue Upton, the institute’s director of membership, said: "HR professionals can now demonstrate how their experience meets our membership criteria in practice.

"By adding a clear focus on experience and behaviours – underpinned by an appropriate level of knowledge and understanding – the new route does more than just maintain existing rigour and standards, it marks a significant raising of the bar."
