Businesses back major survey into barriers facing women

Opportunity Now has launched a project that aims to find out why women are not being promoted at the same rate as men.

Project 28-40 is an online survey targeting up to 100,000 women to share their experiences of work. It is part of the Opportunity Now campaign on gender diversity by Business in the Community (BITC).

Opportunity Now campaign director Kathryn Nawrockyi told HR magazine the survey was primarily aimed at women aged 28 to 40, but would also draw on the experiences of working women of all ages and 1,000 men.

“You hear a lot of anecdotes about the barriers women face in the workplace, but you need to go deeper and ask women about their experiences to understand,” she said.

“There’s been considerable focus on women at board level and in the executive pipeline. But you need to look below the surface to understand the issues for women in the workplace that you want to put into those pipelines.”

Yesterday, Nationwide said it is publically supportedthe project and would urge as many women as possible from its 15,000-strong female workforce to take part.

Women represent 65% of Nationwide’s employees, and the building society recently became the only financial services provider to rank in BITC’s top 10 employer lists for gender and race.

The survey, conducted by PwC, will run until 15 December. To take part, visit the Project 28-40 website.
