Which HR-related research has made you sit up and take notice?

The work done on age discrimination by the Employers Forum on Age, andthe introduction of the new legislation this year. We will all have tothink creatively on how we can make best use of this mature workforcethat is rich in experience.

Who comes closest to being an HR guru?

Charles Handy: his approach to business and his philosophy on life ingeneral strike a chord with me. I very much admire him.

Who would you choose to meet at a networking event?

Michael O'Leary, chief executive of Ryanair: I admire the rapid growthof Ryanair in what is a very competitive marketplace. I would like tounderstand the thinking behind the business model.

Which well-known figure from outside HR would you like to quiz for anhour?

Bill Clinton, whom I regard as one of the most charismatic USpresidents. I would like to discuss his views on leadership andinternational political relationships.

Which film has provided lessons that you have applied to your workinglife?

One of my favourites is The Shawshank Redemption. This tells the storyof Andy, a man in prison who gains the respect of his fellow inmates.His undeniable sense of hope make them take a deeper look at themselvesand the world around them.

What has been your 'Eureka' moment?

It came when when I realised that despite all the writings on HRmanagement and research on good practice and bad practice, the basicprinciples are simple: treat people how you would wish to be treated,with honesty, respect and dignity.
