Volunteering is a point of passion for employees

How Chivas Brothers engages and empowers its employees to take part in community activities

Giving back to and improving the communities in which we have a footprint is a core part of what Pernod Ricard, our parent company, stands for. So a key focus for us is enabling and interesting all our staff to volunteer in their local areas.

Not only does this ensure we remain integrated and socially conscious as a business but we know these activities are a real point of passion for our employees. Having the opportunity to give back to the community can support people in feeling more fulfilled by their career, the company they work for, and gives them a better understanding of the role that we can play in society.

Throughout the year our workers are encouraged to participate in Chivas Spirit of Support (Chivas SOS) – a staff-inspired community scheme that offers all employees an opportunity to volunteer in local communities. In addition, staff also vote for their ‘charity of the year’, which we then support with time and donations.

Our annual day of action, Responsib’All Day, took place on 2 June this year, aligning with Volunteers Week for the first time. It is open to every single employee and its aim is as much to inspire long-term volunteering behaviour as it is to make a big, real impact on community projects.

For 2016 we wanted to create moments of conviviality around the world by selecting projects that bring communities together. It was important for us to align our business goals with our community aims so that our employees could better understand the relationship between the two. To achieve this we partnered with a series of fantastic community development projects across London and Scotland.

Working with Employee Volunteering in Scotland we selected projects where we could have the biggest impact. Our activity was about creating or renewing open, shared, sociable spaces for young and elderly people. Staff unable to take part in the projects had the option to join a two-minute litter pick with Keep Scotland Beautiful. We have found that offering shorter, more accessible options alongside the major projects is important so that we can engage even the busiest workers.

Responsib’All Day is a significant date at Chivas Brothers and our ongoing community activity is a big part of our business. For us it’s really about creating opportunities to try volunteering and then supporting those who want to take it further. A day out of the office to give something back not only helps employees to build relationships with their teams and do something new, it also demonstrates the role they, through our business, can play in supporting and growing their local area. It is a win-win situation for everyone.
