Susie Morgan, HR director, University of Essex

Morgan has been director of HR at the University of Essex since May 2014. The institution is currently the Times Higher Education University of the Year

One of the Times Higher Education Awards judges said: “This is a university that is putting people first. The gender pay gap exists everywhere, but this university said what no-one else dared to say: ‘There is an easy way to get rid of the [professorial] pay gap – spend the money necessary to get rid of it. And do it now’.”

The university has delivered on its pledge to value staff in concrete ways, including a systematic decasualisation of the workforce through pay equality and with staff contracts for graduate teaching assistants.

Morgan was previously director of HR at the Church of England, supporting the archbishops of Canterbury and York, the Archbishops' Council, the Church Commissioners for England and diocesan bishops. Prior to that she was director of HR and commercial services at the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. Morgan has held various NHS posts including at regional health authority-level and in London teaching hospitals.

She is a member of the remuneration committee of the Mission to Seafarers, a trustee of Renew Counselling, and member of the nominations committee of St John Ambulance and the priory of St John of England.

As well as this Morgan has been a non-legal member of the employment tribunals of England and Wales since 1992. She is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and of the Royal Society of Arts.

Her particular interests include organisational development and change in vocational environments, workplace justice and the challenge of mutuality of obligation in the 21st century, and how to square the circle of the Equality Act without creating a hierarchy of rights.
