UK workers most disengaged in Western Europe

Management consultants Hay have released a study that suggests that workers in the UK are the most disengaged in Western Europe.

51% of UK workers described themselves as disengaged, which is defined by the study as ‘unwilling to ‘go the extra mile’ for their firms—and/or frustrated by an inability to do their job effectively [owing] to poor resources, processes and procedures’.

Research by Hay also suggests that the revenue of companies which rate highest in engagement and enablement—defined as "allowing staff to perform effectively"—grows 4.5 times faster than that of others.

82% of senior executives regard disengaged employee as one of the three most significant threats to their business.

Graeme Yell, director at Hay Group, said: "Employee engagement is understandably vulnerable after two years of recession and uncertainty, and disengaged employees can have a detrimental effect on a business’ bottom line.

"Companies must act to safeguard and maximise engagement levels among their staff or risk suffering financially and losing key talent."

3,000 workers from France, Germany, Holland Spain and the UK took part in the study.
