My role at Storehouse, where we needed to keep a sharp eye on the management development agenda when the de-merger brought other priorities into focus.

Vision, good communication skills, a recognition of the value of diverse perspectives, pursuit of excellence, and stamina.


What do you enjoy most about your job?


Its sheer scale and complexity, as well as the opportunity to set new standards.


What do you enjoy least about your job?


Commuting it would be great to have an office in north Buckinghamshire.


What has been your greatest achievement in work?


Holding together and building my existing, excellent team through a period of great change and challenge.


Who has been the greatest influence on your work?


Merlyn Lowther, now chief cashier at the Bank of England, for showing me how to balance analytic rigour and good conceptual work with pragmatic day-to-day requirements.


How big a part does human resources play in your company?


Its fundamental, especially in terms of attracting, developing and retaining people in a truly diverse culture.


What is the most important contribution that HR makes to business?


To keep asking the right questions.
