The stats come as yesterday was dubbed 'National Job Hunt Day 2013'. According to research from recruitment firm Job Bounties, yesterday saw an estimated 11.84 million people looking for a new job.

The research showed that social networks will provide better returns this year than traditional internet searches. It revealed that almost a third of the correspondents said that social media sites, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter have positively impacted their recruitment process.

James Uffindell, CEO, Job Bounties, said: "Your personal network knows you better than anyone else, and friends and family can be a great source for hunting out job opportunities that are perfect for you.

"The age old saying: 'It's not what you know, it's who you know', has more relevance now than at any other time in the internet age."
