Decrease in vacancies in December but improvement in average salary of new jobs

There was a 6% decrease in vacancies across the country in December according to Reed.

96,504 jobs were advertised on the recruitment agency’s site during the last month 2010 compared to 102,952 in November.

The figure represented a 4% increase on December 2009.

Vacancies in the private sector made up a large proportion of those advertised, with job adverts in the public sector falling to less than half the amount of those in December 2009.

Average salary for jobs on the site also increased in December for the first time since April, standing at £33,138.90; just more than the £33,039.72 in December 2009.

In Wales, the North East and North West job demand fell year-on-year, but increased more than 10% in the Midlands, Yorkshire, Humberside, East Anglia and Scotland.

Martin Warnes, reed.co.uk’s MD, said: ""It is true that job growth over the last 12 months has been modest rather than spectacular.

"The real falls in salaries across the board show there remains spare people capacity, and there are clearly economic challenges ahead."
