The BCC estimates 300,000 workers could lose their jobs in the next three years as news from the latest CIPD/KPMG study shows one quarter of organisations now say they plan to make redundancies in the next three months.
David Kern, economic adviser to the BCC, said at the launch of the August 2008 Economic Forecast yesterday: "The level of UK unemployment is likely to increase by nearly 300,000 over the next few years, reaching almost two million. An increase above two million cannot be ruled out."
David Carey of Inspire Career Consultancy said individuals must diversify their skills: "Local employers are struggling in the current climate. Employees must be able to demonstrate an ability to add more value to a business during the credit crunch."
Unemployment could exceed two million
UK unemployment figures could go back to more than two million for the first time in 20 years, according to predictions from the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC).
