Liberal Democrats call on business to improve and report on wellbeing

The Liberal Democrats have launched a policy paper, which aims to make promoting quality of life an integral part of public policy making.

A New Purpose for Politics: Quality of Life states Liberal Democrat policies to achieve good levels of wellbeing, enabling and supporting people to take their own decisions about their lives.

The paper makes reference to employers, calling for company directors to make workplaces healthier and measure the effects of their initiatives.

Liberal Democrat MP for East Dunbartonshire, Jo Swinson, said: "We all recognise that our quality of life matters but large scale studies show that levels of reported life satisfaction in the UK have been roughly static for decades.

"The Liberal Democrats have recognised the problem and are taking the initiative to put forward solutions.

"This paper proposes evidence-based policies to enhance wellbeing, such as extending flexible working rights and rolling out support classes for parents. "It also takes steps to embed the promotion of wellbeing in the heart of Government machine, such as subjecting new policies to wellbeing tests and creating a Cabinet champion for wellbeing."
