Exclusive: The employee of the future will be an entrepreneur, says Dragons' Den star

The employee of the future will be more entrepreneurial, think differently and be more prepared to take risks, according to one business leader.

Rachel Elnaugh [pictured], entrepreneur and one of the original panellists on the BBC hit series Dragons' Den, said: "I think we are in a massive period of change - not a recession - and the kind of business that comes out will be completely different from the kind that went in."

Speaking to HR and recruitment professionals at the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) Annual Conference in Newport, Wales, Elnaugh said: "Old-style capitalism in business is not sustainable. There will be an increasing use of bartering and collaboration - not competition - in business.

"The Government wants to preserve the status quo but business is unsustainable. Entrepreneurs are able to react quickly to changes presented."

Speaking on the theme of employer branding, Elnaugh added: "Businesses will have to work around building up brand values. Having socially responsible values is vital - it is not a cloak you can just put over an old business to cover it up."

And she echoed HR magazine's research on the head office of the future by predicting employers would have to empower staff more, give them more hope and an uplifting working environment. They would have to nurture a cultural change in order to do this.

She added: "Management in the future will be more circular [involving more staff] and will be more ‘feminine orientated', moving away from the old command-and-control structure."
