Average commuter spends a fifth of salary on driving to work, as petrol costs soar

With the average petrol price at an all-time high of 129p a litre, commuting to and from work now costs the average employee £3,782 a year, a fifth of the average net wage, according to Virgin Media Business.

The analysis found workers making the average UK commute of 19 miles a day must work for two months, seven days, seven hours, and 10 minutes before the annual costs of commuting are covered.

This means that the exact moment when most workers stop paying for their commute and start earning for themselves is 5:10pm on Thursday, 10 March. A poll of 5,000 companies by Virgin Media Business revealed that 14 % of UK businesses already offer staff the chance to work remotely.

Mark Heraghty, MD of Virgin Media Business, said: "The thought of spending a fifth of your salary on commuting to work is enough to drive most people up the wall, but every year millions of us are doing just that. The idea that to do work you must be in the workplace no longer rings true. Many workers can now do their job just as well, if not better, from home. The fact that working remotely could save staff a small fortune, while offering a far greater work/life balance is an added bonus."
