It's snow problem: using technology to overcome the weather

With severe snowfall hitting parts of the UK, organisations are being encouraged to use technology to minimalise disruption.

Martin Lyne, director of small and medium business at Orange UK, said: "Businesses need to take advantage of the tools which are literally at their employees finger tips. So, whether it’s smart phones or 3G dongles, remote users have the ability to keep in contact with colleagues via calls, texts and emails.

"Just because an employee is working from home, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have the same IT protection that they enjoy in the office. Using a managed VPN will offer secure, high-speed access to business services and applications remotely from a business device, so you can be confident that information is safe."

Seth Shaw, VP sales and marketing at technology company Logmein, said: "With driving conditions potentially more hazardous, employees should be encouraged to work from home and be given the tools that enable them to stay productive when out of the office—from communications to remote computer access. This can not only minimise the impact of adverse weather, but can actually allow companies to be more flexible in their approach any disruption."

The BBC reported that 13 inches of snow had fallen over night in parts of Northumberland.

Temperatures of -15C were recorded in the Scottish Highlands.
