Don't forget what it's like to be a candidate

HR has forgotten what it’s like to be a candidate, former head of talent and resourcing at TalkTalk Jo Taylor has said.

She was speaking on a panel at the REC’s Talent, Recruitment and Employment Conference 2015.

Taylor, who is searching for her next HR leadership role, said: “As an HR function we have forgotten what it feels like to be a candidate. It’s not nice to have to go out and sell yourself constantly.”

She advised HR to “go back to basics” on recruitment and offer a “consumer grade experience”. “Rather than putting our HR hats on, we need to put our consumer hats on,” she said.

Penguin Random House group HR director UK & Ireland Neil Morrison said recruiters mustn’t forget they are “the gatekeepers” to organisations. “We can have a profound effect on people,” he added.

HR magazine was media partner at the REC TREC 2105 conference.
