Twenty years on: the continuing fight for LGBT+ inclusion in the workplace

How to best serve LGBT+ employees

Sasha Misra, Stonewall’s associate director of communications and campaigns, said that the range of sectors represented in this year’s list was encouraging, and a sign of a more well-rounded approach to LGBTQ+ inclusivity in the workplace.

Speaking to HR magazine, Misra said: “Employers on the list have demonstrated their commitment to creating an inclusive workplace where all their LGBT+ employees are safe and free.

“This means that they have shown commitment to embedding LGBT+ inclusion throughout their policies and practices, including specific commitment to bi and trans staff, who are often overlooked when it comes to inclusion.”

Insurance multinational Aviva ranked at 27 on this year’s list of top employers.

Sharing how the company is championing LGBT+ inclusivity, chief people officer Danny Harmer told HR magazine: "The credit for this goes to our amazing Pride community and co-chairs who work with the business to help make Aviva more inclusive every day, benefitting all our colleagues and communities.

"Organisations need to have brilliant policies, such as our approach on equal parental leave, partner with organisations like Stonewall and then support their communities and give them the space to progress the inclusion agenda and challenge the business to be better.”

Law firm Linklaters also ranked on this year's list at 53.

In addition to prioritising LGBT+ in its D&I strategy and supporting Diversity Week each year, the firm has a dedicated mentoring programme for LGBT+ colleagues and encourages network members and allies to share their experiences.

It has also joined the Human Rights Campaign to pursue strategic litigation against discriminatory actions against the LGBTQ+ community in the US.

Speaking to HR magazine, Linklaters’ chief HR officer and executive committee LGBT+ champion Angela Ogilvie, said: "We are committed to creating an environment of inclusion and belonging for everyone at Linklaters.

"We want to be home to a culture where bringing your whole self to work is celebrated and individuals feel comfortable to be themselves and able to perform at their best."

This week, Stonewall also launched its Bring Yourself to Work campaign which, under the hashtag #BeingLGBTQAtWork, encourages LGBT+ people to share their experience to help others learn examples of best practice.

Misra added: “Creating environments where we can all feel comfortable makes the workplace a safer, better and friendlier place for everyone and helps staff be proud of who they are.”
