HRMI 2021: Roger Kline, Research Fellow, Middlesex University Business School

Kline worked for eight trade unions over 25 years, notably leading the negotiations which settled the landmark Enderby equal pay case. As Research Fellow at Middlesex University Business School, he authored the landmark report “The Snowy White Peaks of the NHS” (2014) and then designed the Workforce Race Equality Standard becoming joint national director 2015-17.

Kline helped NHS employers pilot an innovative approach to disciplinary action which reduced cases by 28% and halved the gap between the treatment of White and Black and Minority Ethnic staff nationally (Being Fair (2019)) He is co-author with Duncan Lewis of The Price of Fear (2018) on NHS bullying.

He is co-author of Professional accountability in social care and health (2013). Kline has substantially influenced NHS professional regulator EDI policy, notably the NMC, the GMC (Fair to Refer (2019)) and as external EDI adviser to the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Kline is author of No More Tick Boxes (NHS East of England 2021) reviewing the research evidence on fair recruitment and career progression, already influencing NHS policy and practice.

Kline is adviser to numerous NHS expert groups, NHS Trusts and national bodies on HR, equality, and wellbeing.
