Pret creates weekend jobs for UK teens

International food-on-the-go retailer Pret a Manger is endeavouring to help British young people gain valuable work experience.

It has reworked its in-store roles to be able to give weekend jobs to British teens, its group people director told HR magazine.

Andrea Wareham said Pret used to have fewer weekend-only roles, due to the availability of flexible labour.

But since launching its School Leaver Programme two years ago, the food retailer decided creating weekend jobs would help young people get valuable work experience.  It has created 105 weekend roles since September 2013.

“If we want to help British young people, the thing to do is give them weekend work,” said Wareham. “If someone works every Saturday, they are learning great skills.”

Many experts blame the ‘death of the Saturday job’ for young people not being work-ready.
