HR slow to innovate in talent management

Organisations are not making enough progress when it comes to innovation in talent management, according to research

Fosway Group and SumTotal Systems' report, Talent Management and People Development in Practice: A Call to Action, explored the technological challenges for HR when it comes to talent management.

It found that 70% of organisations think their technology to support talent is not fit for the modern workforce. Only 9% think this technology is fully ready, while 20% think their talent systems are not at all ready for the modern workforce.

Researchers warned that insufficient use of technology could be holding the HR function back from innovating around talent management.

The report found that a third (33%) are still relying on spreadsheets to manage talent and people development processes, while a fifth (21%) are unable to prove the value of talent practices.

Furthermore, only 44% were found to measure the impact of their talent strategies on business objectives, and around 21% have no measure of their talent objectives.

On a more positive note, the report highlighted that 80% of organisations plan to increase their investment in HR and talent technology.

Liam Butler, AVP EMEA of SumTotal Systems, said: “This latest study highlights that accelerating people’s careers by developing, challenging and growing their skills is now critical for all organisations, everywhere. With the changing future of work, and a backdrop of economic uncertainty, recruiting, developing and retaining the best people is more important than ever."

“Change in the nature of work and in the workforce continues to be big news, but companies are struggling to change their people and learning strategies fast enough to close widening gaps in talent and skills,” added David Wilson, CEO of Fosway Group.

“This research highlights the need for HR, talent and learning to innovate faster and to focus on talent outcomes aligned with real business priorities.”
