A quarter of UK workers have lied on expense paperwork in order to increase the size of their claim, according to a new report.

Employee expense management company Globalexpense surveyed over 2,000 employees in various sectors, and found that mileage claims are the most likely to be inflated.

In the same survey last year, only 15% admitted to exaggerating claims.

47% of respondents said that they inflated claims by up to £10 per month, with 4% magnifying claims by between £51 and £100 per month.

David Vine, GlobalExpense’s CEO, said that the expense scandal that rocked Westminster had decreased the public’s predisposition towards such exaggeration, but tolerance was increasing.

"Not only is the number of people exaggerating their expenses on the increase, but the general public’s acceptance of exaggerating expenses claims is creeping back-up to pre-MPs’ expenses scandal levels, too," Vine said.
