Iceland will create 2,500 jobs across the UK after acquiring 51 stores previously owned by Woolworths.

Nick Canning, marketing director at Iceland, said: "We are confident we can help support the local community in towns that have lost a major high-street retailer in Woolworths.

"We look forward to developing our business in 2009."
