British employees consume 165 million cups of tea at work every day but boil enough water to make 330 million cups.
According to sustainable business consultancy Envirowise, tea-loving staff are boiling twice as much water as they need so the firm is encouraging employees to ‘think before they drink'.
Mary Leonard, director at Envirowise, said: "Companies can really save money by implementing a number of resource saving initiatives in their place of work, however big or small. Since 1994 we have proven and promoted the benefits of resource efficiency in great detail, saving UK business over £1 billion in the process.
"We want to alert people that even such an often overlooked non-core business activity as boiling a cup of tea can contribute to reducing water usage, and go some way to cut down the amount of water boiled for tea making and subsequently wasted each year."
