There is a clear case for action across businesses to boost mental health and wellbeing, according to a Government think tank.
Foresight, the Government's futures think tank, found work-related absenteeism accounts for between 10 million and 14 million days lost each year, costing businesses £750 per annum.
It said: "Continuously developing our mental capital by training and retraining through our working lives will be crucial to competing in the global market for skills and can improve mental wellbeing."
Foresight also advised that new forms of flexible working could help employees meet the demands of intensification of work and the increased care responsibilities of staff. It also recommended better integration of primary care and occupational health services to identify early symptoms of stress and mental ill-health. This could help people return to work.
