Poundland is receiving on average 350 applications for every new customer services role advertised.

The budget retailer is reporting high numbers of applications for existing roles as well, with the advertised position of assistant manager at the Kilburn store in London receiving 348 applications.

Earlier this year, Poundland announced it was to open 40 new stores by the end of 2009 - creating 1,500 new jobs - and has already opened 13 new outlets since April. The firm has employed 500 new staff this year, including 60 ex-employees of Woolworths.

The news comes as unemployment figures released yesterday show the highest level of unemployment in more than 10 years - 2.38 million.

Poundland's chief executive, Jim McCarthy, said: "Although the figures make grim reading, we are proud that Poundland is able to offer opportunities to communities where new stores are opening.

"The Poundland offering is attracting more and more savvy shoppers in this difficult period, including those who are experiencing unemployment. We are forging ahead with our ambitious expansion plans, which will help many back into work and provide amazing value to thousands more customers."

A new Poundland store is due to open tomorrow in Penzance, bringing the total in the UK to 219.
