More than half of jobseekers in the UK blame their school education for not preparing them properly for a career.

According to online job board Tiptopjob.com, 55% of jobseekers do not think their school or college managed their expectations of the working environment and two fifths (40%) do not think their education provided them with the skills for work and the increasingly competitive jobs market.

Mike Dauncey, managing director of Tiptopjob.com, said: "This shows the education system is still not working effectively. In the current job market British people are finding it increasingly difficult to find employment and it seems that the schooling system is still not supporting them.

"Heavy government funding and top level schemes are not enough; pupils need to be aware of the difficult challenge awaiting them when they leave school and train accordingly.

"Vocational courses give students a career goal and prospects instead of training for the generic office jobs that are hugely oversubscribed."

Earlier this week, research from the CIPD and KPMG predicted few job opportunities this year for school elavers and graduates.
