One fifth of employees are frustrated in their jobs while 46% of managers create de-motivating climates for employees.
Research by management consultancy Hay Group found half of employees do not believe they have the authority to make decisions crucial to their jobs, while more than a third (35%) believe their job does not make the best use of their skills and abilities.
The report shows only 26% of managers achieve a high-performance climate in their workplace and almost half of employers (48%) deal effectively with staff underperformance.
Ben Hubbard, regional director for EMEA at Hay Group, said: "The world's most successful companies go the extra mile to identify, reward, engage and enable their best performers, while addressing the ‘deadwood'. Those that fail to do so risk high-performing staff becoming frustrated, de-motivated and potentially seeking pastures new."
