CSR needs HR input to be effective

17 Jan 2008

HR departments are crucial to the implementation of an organisations CSR programme, according to a leading expert.

Gill Coleman, who has co-written two books on the subject, was speaking at the Globally Responsible Leadership Making it Happen event at Roffey Park.

She told HR magazine: HR departments are really important, but very often they are completely left out. People tend to go into CSR roles via health and safety or community engagement, but they will often have their own agendas. She explained that the HR function is central to business strategy and useful to CSR as it is able to provide motivation and meaning for employees.

On whether politicians could do more, Coleman said: There is a role for Government, but if we wait for legislation on CSR we will be waiting indefinitely.

Look out for HR magazines Make a Difference campaign, launched this month, to see how your HR department can get involved in CSR.
