05 Jan 2007

UK opinion has hardened against offshoring, according to a recent survey. While these are probably jobs we wouldn't want to do ourselves, we are still worried about losing work to the likes of India and China.

And of course few of us want to do our banking in Bangalore.

82% believe that enough jobs have moved offshore already, according to aDeloitte/YouGov survey. Moreover, 32% of respondents think that UKcompanies should be forced to bring jobs back to the UK while a mere 4%of respondents support a continuation of offshoring. In January 2006when the survey was first conducted, 29% thought that it was a goodthing. Now, this figure has fallen to 13%.

76% of those quizzed thought that China represented the biggestchallenge to the UK economy, while 48% considered India to be our numberone worry. More interesting though is that 34% named the US and 32%Japan.As for remedying the problem, 65% said that investment ineducation and training was needed and 57% wanted encouragement for smallbusinesses and entrepreneurs.
