Kate Guthrie, group HR director, Clydesdale and Yorkshire bank

Kate Guthrie joined the group in January 2016 immediately prior to its demerger from National Australia Group and the subsequent IPO and listing on the UK Stock Exchange

She leads the development and implementation of the company’s innovative people strategy including the group’s purpose and values. Following two very successful years as an independent business, CYBG acquired Virgin Money in October 2018.

Guthrie and her team are now leading on the organisation design and people-related challenges associated with the integration of the two companies. This includes a transformational approach to leadership and performance management and a team-based incentive scheme linked to delivery of the group strategy. The business is the sixth-largest bank in the UK and a credible challenger to the status quo in UK banking.

Immediately prior to joining CYBG/Virgin Money, she worked for Lloyds Banking Group for 11 years. She played a key role in developing the company’s approach to culture and capability as HR director for culture, capability and engagement having also been the divisional HR director for the insurance and investments business.

With more than 30 years' domestic and international multi-sector experience Guthrie has worked for a number of companies that are recognised for their HR functions and alumni. They include Marks and Spencer, Diageo, and Novartis.

She is the deputy chair and senior independent director of Action for Children, one of the UK’s leading children’s charities, and a trustee of the Virgin Money Foundation. She was also the inaugural chair of the Bank of Scotland Foundation.
