Outplacement services should be compulsory say public sector staff

As the public sector braces itself for across-the-board job cuts, of survey of public sector workers finds 85% of them want career transition services and CV/interview advice to be made compulsory.

 


 The Hays surveys questioned nearly 300 HR professionals and line managers and more than 750 employees across the public, private and voluntary sectors. It found 50% of public sector employees expect further redundancies in the next twelve months.

Although 80% of public sectors workers who had experience of being made redundant had made use of outplacement services, 73% of public sectors employees said there was no current support from their employer about being made redundant.
 
Some of the reasons employers cite for not using career transitions services in the past has been a lack of internal resource to organise it (44%) and that it is not seen as important by management (40%).
 
"The problem with existing services is they often only go so far, and concentrate only on the psychological aspects of redundancy," said Mark Staniland, MD of Hays' Career Transition Services. He added: "The employees we surveyed told us that the one area they really wanted help is finding a job, which is why the most effective transition support is linked to recruitment and the practical aspect of searching for a new role."

This article has hit the nail on the head. It is correct and realistic in so many ways. Employees \(and employers) are adopting the old way of doing things, forgetting that in the last 2 years the job market has turned on it's head. One word of warning for public sectore employers is that this service should definitely NOT be delivered internally. As an outplacement provider \(integratedhr.co.uk), I have worked with the public sector, and I can say that it is a big challenge to eductate the long service employees on the ways of the outside world. The internally provided sessions have been purely aimed at how to complete other public sector application forms. The time to wake up and get real is here.

Completely agree with Henry Notemans' comments. In any organisation using internal outplacement support is risky and even more so in the public sector, we have worked with employees who have 10 years plus service and even in the private sector the latest recruitment methods, the focus and skill required to produce achievement based CV's, etc, leaves exiting employees cold. You can only have empathy and deliver an effective outplacement service if you have been through the painful process of redundancy yourself.
