The Towers Watson Global 50 Remuneration Planning Report is based on remuneration figures for 50 roles across 57 countries. It reveals median base-level professional pay in the UK now stands at £27,199.
This moves British workers ahead of Spain and Italy but still behind the 12 top European economies. Swiss workers have the highest median base pay at £66,671.
British workers fare better in terms of professional middle-management pay. In this measurement the UK has moved from tenth to seventh in the European rankings. The median figure for UK middle-managers is now £72,524, moving it to around the middle of the top European economies.
Towers Watson's Data Services senior consultant Darryl Davis said that despite progress in the UK, there is still a "considerable gap" between pay here and in other European countries.
"For the economy as a whole though, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it means UK wages are able to grow in a healthy way while remaining competitive in cost terms versus other Western European economies," he added.
