Technology skills vital say HR leaders

Almost three quarters of those questioned felt that future managers should have an equal understanding of business and technology, while 90% of HR leaders said they look for critical thinking skills in interviewees and with 70% cited advanced analytical skills as highly desirable.

The poll was commissioned to mark Geography Awareness Week by geographical information systems ESRI UK, which works in partnership with the Royal Geographical Society. A total of 200 business leaders were asked about the importance of various skills taught in geography syllabuses.

Speaking to HR, ESRI UK’s MD Richard Waite said: "Geography has suffered in the past as having a fairly fuddy-duddy image both form employers and students.

"Employers are starting to realise that the skills that geography imparts to students have real generic value. It’s about the skills rather than knowing how mountains are formed."

Rita Gardner, director of the Royal Geographical Society, said: "It is encouraging to see that business leaders cite geography skills as a key attribute to greater employability in the graduate sector.

"With the help of businesses and universities, we hope to grow our support for tomorrow’s geography professionals in getting a foot on the job ladder and a rewarding career."
