Political astuteness: An essential workplace skill

Being politically astute and managing a diverse range of stakeholders is becoming an essential workplace skill, writes Jean Hartley, professor in public leadership at The Open University Business School.

Writing for the HR Most Influential microsite, for which The Open University Business School is a partner, Hartley explains that while politics used to be seen as “a dirty word”, being politically astute is becoming increasingly important for leaders.

“Politics is not only about conflict but also about creating sufficient agreement to work more productively as an organisation,” says Hartley. “Dubbed the 'art of getting things done', political astuteness is about working with contest and conflict to achieve organisational and social goals.”
