Reilly studied for an MA in social sciences, geography and economics in The University of Glasgow. She was head of employee relations and resourcing at DIY chain Homebase in 1995, leaving four years later to join Sainsbury's. At the supermarket giant she rose through a number of HR positions, from head of training and development, to HR director - strategy and planning and finally retail human resources director between 2004-2006, before joining FCC Environmental.
