Andrea Cartwright joined SuperDry owner SuperGroup in 2013 as its first HR director. She says the fashion retailer prides itself in avoiding some of the bureaucracy that can exist in organisations and in having an innovative HR practice.

When Andrea Cartwright joined SuperGroup it had never had an HR director before, and its HR team was very transactionally focused before she joined. There weren’t any HR infrastructure nor systems. Cartwright set about creating the HR purpose and people vision, improving capability in areas such as learning and development, transforming HR and building a people strategy among other areas.

SuperGroup owns the Superdry brand and operates in the branded fashion clothing sector; selling clothing through retail, e-commerce and wholesale channels around the world. Superdry focuses on high quality fashionable products fusing Americana and Japanese inspired graphics with a British style. The Group operates from 150 owned stores in UK and Europe and 250 franchise and licensed stores around the world and employs more than 4,000 people across 15 different employment jurisdictions across the world.

Cartwright joined SuperGroup from Nationwide Building Society were she was head of HR, organisational effectiveness and resourcing: leading the HR agenda/business partner relationship across Group Operations (c5,000 employees in technology, transformation and customer operations), Resourcing services across the entire Nationwide Group and leading a Group wide programme to increase organisational effectiveness.

In 2003 she launched consultancy, Toriben, working for eight years for clients including the Department of Work & Pensions, the House of Commons and law firm DLA Piper. In 2008 she also joined Nationwide as head of employee engagement.

Prior to this Cartwright was head of HR and AXA after joining as head of HR policy at Barclays Bank. She started her HR career as HR policy manager at Tesco Stores in 1986, holding posts at 10 stores across London and the South East.

Cartwright was nominated by HR magazine for the 2014 HR Director of the Year award.
