Employers asked to do more to encourage staff to cycle to work

The Government is encouraging employers to provide more facilities for staff wishing to cycle to work.

The Department of Transport has asked employers to sign the Cycle to Work Guarantee. The plan covers five areas: providing safe, accessible bike parking facilities at the workplace; providing changing facilities for staff; implementing a tax-efficient cycle to work scheme; ensuring there are bike repair facilities near work sites; and offering training and reward programmes for employees who ride bicycles to work.

The Cycle to Work Guarantee is being promoted by Government and employers to offer employees a healthy and green option to get to and from work. Typically, a third or more of staff working for large urban employers live within half an hour bike ride of their place of work, but only about 3% currently cycle to work.

Most central government departments have signed up as well as major companies including BSkyB, E.ON and GlaxoSmithKline.  Dozens of local authorities and hospitals have also agreed to commit to the Guarantee, which is aimed at large employers. Other large employers will now be invited to follow suit.

Transport secretary Andrew Adonis said: "If proper facilities were more widely available, I believe far more people would cycle to work. At present only 3% do so. We could double or treble that figure with proper bike storage and changing facilities and safe cycle routes - and that's my aim.

"For employees, cycling is a great way to save money while getting fit.  And for all of us, it will cut rush hour congestion and reduce carbon emissions.

"We've seen that this approach can work. The number of GlaxoSmithKline employees cycling to work has tripled since it introduced the right facilities at its headquarters. I see no reason why the Cycle to Work Guarantee can't spread this success widely."

'I believe the government's Cycle to Work Guarantee can be viewed very positively as it represents a practical and achievable progression on the last five year's experience gained from the Cycle to Work scheme.

Cyclescheme are perfectly placed to implement all aspects of the guarantee, using our Nationwide partner store network and trade contacts, but employers will need to assess actual participation from existing cycle commuters and staff who plan to shift from other forms of transport in order to adopt the guarantee in a sensible way. For example, a true assessment of demanded changing and cycle storage infrastructure can only be made once a Cycle to Work scheme has been in place for a reasonable period of time. And this is a crucial aspect of the scheme - it is intended that these facilities be created 'for all staff who want them' which, in reality, is often less than 3% of the workforce.

Cycle Training and a local source of maintenance is now very achievable due to our network of over 1450 local independent cycle stores and the abundance of training bodies springing up to cater for the increased demand.'

'Please note that information on the Cycle to Work Guarantee can be found on our website.'

Best wishes,

Richard Grigsby, Director, Cyclescheme

The additional support given by the likes of Lord Adonis and Andy Burnham to the cycle to work scheme is great news for businesses and employees across the UK.

Those organisations that have already signed up to the cycle to work guarantee already recognise the part cycling has to pay in reducing the amount of traffic on our streets, and helping to get workers fit and healthy.

More and more companies, and their employees, have been signing up to the scheme with suppliers like Cycle Solutions. Employees can save as much as 53% through the scheme.

Details of the benefits available to public and private sector organisations, and their employees, are available on our website at www.cyclesolutions.co.uk.
